Luton Committee for Racial Harmony (LCRH)
18 January, 2010(LCRH) is a broad-based community organisation committed to combating racial prejudice, discrimination, bullying, harassment, poverty, injustice and disharmony. It was formed in 1971due to a considerable amount of racial tension in Luton and Bedfordshire. A community meeting was organised by several community based organisations, representing all the main faith groups; social, welfare and cultural organisations; political Parties; and trade unions. The meeting in July 1971 was attended by over 400 people including the local Members of Parliament, the Minister for Immigration and local leaders of all the major religious groups in Luton. The meeting deplored the many incidents associated with racial attacks, violence, harassment, discrimination, abuse and threats to racial harmony. The meeting also acknowledged that racial discrimination was widespread and that everyone should work towards improving racial tolerance, community cohesion and social justice in all areas of activity. It was resolved that a Steering Group should be established in order to set up a local voluntary community based organisation to work with the established agencies, institutions and community groups to combat racial discrimination, prejudice and lack of equal access to opportunities in all areas of social, cultural, economic and political activities. The first meeting of the Steering Group met in September 1971 and decided to establish Luton Committee for Racial Harmony with specific aims and objects. Reverend Eric West from the Anglican Church was elected Secretary, Jim Thakoordin from the Luton Community Relations Council was elected as Chair and Cecil Harrison from the West Indian Association was elected as Treasurer. In 2007, LCRH ceased to exist and Luton Committee for Racial Harmony Limited was created as it was recommended that the organisation should become a legal entity. All assets and materials were transferred from LCRH to Luton Committee for Racial Harmony a Community Interest Company Limited by Guarantee on 16th April 2007. LCRH had curtailed its advisory work as from 2005 and to focus its resources towards more strategic work with specific outputs and targets aimed at project based activities, including education, training, capacity building, community empowerment, community cohesion, partnership working and campaigning for racial equality and justice. Between 2008 and 2009 LCRH (CIC) organised very few formal and structured activities due to the decline of volunteers and serious health problems amongst the 3 Trustees. It has been planned to re-launch LCRH (CIC) in early 2010.
